Chapter 11: Gentlemen, One and All

Toby, Rowdy, Humphrey, Gus Gavin and Dudley Spurs all sat around the Ranger table of the Gold Star Saloon. The boys well into their whiskeys after the long days of cleaning and painting the Ranger Post. The complaining and anger had long subsided in the men as they now joked along with Toby Bees about nearly everything. Mostly making fun of old Bill Vents and Weston Smith who were conveniently absent that evening.

Rowdy being the best at imitating one or another of the two men. First, he would imitate the clamorous Weston Smith, complaining about Toby and the dromedaries as he walked around the saloon table with his legs bowed out like Weston’s from a lifetime of sitting on a horse. The boys just about to bust a gut laughing and all.

Then he would imitate the pugnacious Bill Vents much to the men’s delight. Hacking and spitting while he swore at everyone at the table just like Sergeant Vents would do when riled up a bit. Walking around like he had a corncob up his ass as Bill did ever since he had his buttocks shot up during the gunfight at the Gold Dust Saloon back in San Antonio.

One would reckon the boys were having just about as much fun as was possible. Their superior officers off hunting down Comanche and them all back there in Laredo enjoying themselves in the absence of any other authority besides that of Sergeant Toby Bees.

“Life is good,” said Toby Bees out loud.

“That it is, Partner,” Rowdy Bates replied to his friend’s observation. “Why don’t we mosey on over to the Gentlemen’s Club for a spell.”

“You reckon they will let us in without the Captain or Sergeant Smith along?” Toby asked.

“Of course, they will let us in. All you need is money and some of that we got. Maybe not so much as to pay a nice lady for the night, but we sure as hell have enough to buy a drink or two and flirt some. Ain’t no harm in that,” Rowdy replied.

“I don’t know about going to such a fancy place without the Captain,” Humphrey Willow said kind of shy like.

“Come on you cowards,” Rowdy insisted. “They are just women. They ain’t going to bite you none. At least if you ain’t lucky,” Rowdy Bates beamed, the whiskey showing on his face making it glow red and his eyes glassy.

The five Texas Rangers made their way down the streets of Laredo. A bit happier than was normal but not so affected by the whiskey as to make them drop their guards. Something they have learned from experience out on the trail and in wild towns like San Antonio and El Paso. Never knowing exactly what you will run into out here in the untamed lands of Southern Texas.

They made their way down the street kicking their boots at loose rocks that lay about. With each kick of a rock rose a cloud of dirt from the dusty street.
